A ton of different computer speakers are available and it can be tough to choose which are right for your needs and your budget. The first thing to choose is whether a pair of stereo speakers is sufficient, or if you want a set of surround sound speakers with rear speakers, a subwoofer, etc.
If you have limited space, stereo speakers may be a good approach. For many desks, it can be difficult to place surround sound speakers in a way that truly gives you a sense of surround sound. Keep in mind that speakers with bigger drivers and woofers will generally be able to reproduce better bass.
Small cube speakers will produce mostly mids and high frequencies, and may either lack bass or need a subwoofer positioned on the floor. A subwoofer can be a good addition, especially if you like deep bass sounds or like to “feel” the bass in your gut. Some speakers will stand by themselves on a desk. Others are meant to be used with stands. Still others will hang from your computer monitor.
The size of speaker you find as well as the amount of desk space you have may dictate which type you choose. Keep in mind that many computer speakers are cheaply made and that you may get better sound for the price by shopping in the home audio department. The downside here is that most of the speakers are passive and will need some type of amplification. It’s a good idea to watch out for good deals online!
