Understanding Wireless Speakers

wireless speakers surroundOne recent innovation in audio that most people don’t know about are wireless speakers. It was not long ago that all speakers required you to run a cable from your audio receiver to each speaker.

Particularly for the rear speakers in a surround sound set-up, this meant running a cable through your room, or finding a way to run it through the walls.

A new generation of wireless speakers aims to give you the immersive quality of surround sound without dealing with the annoying wires.

Most use one of two different technologies. Some communicate using infrared which is the same technology as your remote controls. This can work very well, but often requires a clear line of sight between the speaker and its infrared transmitter.

Other wireless speakers work on radio frequencies, much like your cordless phone or wireless internet network. These don’t require line of site and can transmit longer distances, but there can be problems with interference from devices that use the same radio spectrum such as phones and microwave ovens. Keep in mind that the speakers will receive the audio signal wirelessly, but still need to get power somehow.

In some cases, this can mean battery powered speakers. More commonly the speakers will have a power cord that needs to be plugged in. This of course makes them not entirely wireless which is true. Instead, the benefit is that you can plug them into a power source at the rear of your room instead of running a cable from the front to the back of the room. Keep in mind that this technology is relatively new, and will not be as foolproof as traditional speakers connected to the amplifier by a wire.
